Adam DeJans Jr.
Operations research scientist. I have spent more than a decade designing optimization and simulation systems that run in production: supply allocation, ordering, production planning, routing, and fleet sizing. Today I work on retail supply chain decisions as a Senior Research Scientist at Amazon.
What the work has looked like
- Supply allocation at Toyota North America. I initiated and designed the North American supply allocation engine, a mixed-integer program in Gurobi governing about $60 billion in production decisions. Finance signed off on $390 million in realized profit over two years, attributed to the project.
- Fleet sizing and routing at Ford. A discrete-event simulation that identified a 27% smaller fleet at the same service level, and vehicle routing algorithms that scheduled more than 300,000 trips.
- Solver engineering at Gurobi. Diagnosing branch-and-bound behavior, reformulating models, and tuning solvers for enterprise optimization teams.
- Writing. Four books, including The MILP Optimization Handbook, The Linearization Handbook for MILP Optimization, and The Decision Factory, a novel about decisions under uncertainty with a foreword by Warren B. Powell. One granted US patent, for dynamic-programming-based multimodal route optimization.
Why this site exists
Most optimization material sits at one of two extremes: textbooks that prove everything and implement nothing, or tutorials that call a solver without saying why the model is shaped the way it is. The useful layer in between, the recurring structure of a decision and the reasons one formulation beats another, is mostly passed around by word of mouth.
Data Pattern Pro writes that layer down. Each pattern states the decision, the math, the intuition, the code, and the mistakes. The playground lets you push on the parameters and see the answer move, because that is how intuition for optimization is actually built.
The site began as a data science interview-preparation resource. The optimization references from that version are preserved, unchanged, on the Optimization page.
